Must-see Spanish Towns

Many of us Brits travel to Spain, but only a few of us venture outside of Barcelona, Madrid, Benidorm or Magaluf, mainly due to the rise in cheap deals to these locations and the extensive range of tourist infrastructure in these cities. But travel outside of these cities and you find a wealth of the most interesting, charming and picturesque villages.
Ronda is the first town on this list and needs to be seen to believe how incredible this small town really is. Travel in-land from the souther tip of Spain to find Ronda, you won’t regret it as it has some of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. Built upon the top of a canyon, this town is not to be missed. The old side of the town is connected to the new side by three interconnecting bridges, Puente Nuevo (New Bridge) was completed in 1793 and towers 120 meters above the canyon below. This is a spectacular image in itself, not to mention the oldest bull fighting ring in the country. This town is a part of essential Spain and a must visit.
Mijas is next on our list, the spectacular town known formally as “The White Town of Mijas” is perfect for the budding food and wine connoisseur, with many beautiful restaurants and caf©s, there is plenty choice of traditional Spanish tapas.
The intimacy of Nerja is unrivalled, which puts it onto this list. Visit the local patisserie and request a picnic and a bottle of wine to take with your loved one up to the “Balcon de Europa”, the Balcony of Europe and admire the views of the mountains, sea and your partner. The sun set from the top is magical, and a highly recommended experience for the couple in love to share.

You could also go on a day excursion to nearby Toledo and see the cathedral that took 250 years to build as well as the Alcazar, Toledos imposing fortress.
Seville may mostly be famous for its oranges, but its also a cultural treasure trove thats well worth a visit as part of your vacation to Spain. For those of you who like a drink occasionally, check out the sherry bodegas at Jerez. If you like horses, go and see them dance at the School of Equestrian Art. There are also the brilliantly interesting Roman ruins of Italica at Santiponce. Another highlight of Seville is the flamenco dancing on offer at many of the citys fantastic tablaos.
For some simply sensational Moorish architecture and history, you really should visit Granada. Its home to the Alhambra Palace, whose grounds take up large swathes of the city. Its a Moorish fortified palace and is considered to be one of the top representations of Islamic architecture and art. For a more homely experience, visit the streets of the Moorish Albaicin. You can also visit the wonderful International Festival of Music and Dance and check out the winter skiing in the Sierra Nevada.
For a wonderful regional cultural experience, you should check out Northern Spain. This is the location of the real life Guernica, which was heavily bombed by the Nazis in the Second World War and now makes for an informative, educational trip. You can also visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao or go for a lovely drive along the Basque coast west of San Sebastian. If you like a bit of thrill, try running the bulls at Pamplona in July: a must for any daredevil.
